Welcome to We Declare, a program developed by the American Repertory Theater's Education and Engagement team to coincide with the theater's production of the musical, 1776.  

1776 depicts the pivotal moment in American history in which John Adams and other signers of the Declaration of Independence grappled with the pursuit of freedom and its inherent contradictions.  This production, with a cast reflecting multiple representations of race, ethnicity, and gender, asks, “Who does freedom belong to?”  We Declare asks students to apply this lens to their own study and directly informs their understanding that their own lives are connected to the long sweep of history and that they have the power to create the society in which they wish to live.

There are two ways for teachers and schools to participate:  
1. The A.R.T. is proud to offer in-school residencies of 2-5 days, free of charge.  In this format, a Teaching Artist from the A.R.T. will partner with a classroom teacher to lead theatre-based activities that activate history, and connect students' own experiences with their study of the Declaration of Independence and current events.
2. Teachers who wish to implement the program on their own will receive access to an index of suggested arts integration tools and activities, as well as digital content featuring the cast and creative team as they grapple with the production and program's essential questions.  Teachers may select the activities that work for their classes and time constraints, and A.R.T. Education staff will be available to make recommendations and provide guidance.

In either pathway, opportunities will be available for students to share their creations, whether as a group or individually.
